Miscanthus Giganteus or elephant grass as it is sometimes known is a biomass crop originating from South East Asia. Initially introduced into Europe as an ornamental garden plant, it is now one of the most environmentally sustainable crops grown in the UK.
Miscanthus is a non-invasive crop grown from a rhizome, quite literally plant and leave, with little or no requirement for fertilisers or pesticides once established. This low intensity, versatile crop grows easily in challenging conditions and creates a structured, sustainable base that is ecologically beneficial. Growing up to 3 metres tall, Miscanthus adds structural resources creating excellent cover for our native wildlife.
Biomass grass crops (such as miscanthus) can provide substantially improved habitat for many forms of native wildlife, due to the low intensity of the agricultural management system and the untreated headlands (T.Semere & F.Slater, Biomass & Bioenergy 2007)
During the lifecycle of the crop Miscanthus captures and stores carbon, having a positive effect on the environment. Capturing carbon helps to reduce the effects of climate change.
In growing, harvesting and processing Miscanthus, Burlybed has made the conscious decision to support sustainability and our environment.
Miscanthus makes a fantastic natural animal bedding when processed due to its bamboo-like structure. A durable outer cane contains a spongy inner core that is incredibly absorbent as well as absorbing odours. Our processing system is specifically designed to make the most of this incredible crop. The outer cane is split open to ensure maximum core exposure for optimum absorbency whilst maintaining the integrity of the outer cane to ensure the durability of the end product. The combination of cane and core creates what we believe is the ideal bedding.
Miscanthus is a fast growing, environmentally beneficial, hardy crop that creates an ultra absorbent, durable and environmental choice compared to wood based alternatives.
